The SAT, along with the ACT, is the standardised test required for admission in top universities, primarily in the Unites States. The SAT is not an IQ or knowledge based test, but a test based on aptitudes and skills, and is meant to asses the skills considered necessary to any student embarking on an undergraduate journey, regardless of the course chosen. 
 
The SAT is a paper based test that takes almost 4 hours to complete. It consists of multiple choice questions that asses Math and Critical Reading & Writing Skills, as well as a 50 minutes optional essay. The candidates receive separate scores for the Math sections (out of 800), Critical Reading and Writing Sections (out of 800), and the essay (our of 24). As opposed to the old version of the SAT, the new one does not penalise test takers for wrong answers. 
 
The minimum requirement for doing well on this test is a strong foundation of high school math concepts, as well as a strong foundation of English grammar and good comprehension skills. The good news when it comes to standardised tests is that success depends on a combination of the right motivation, the right strategy and enough time to prepare. Once these 3 are in place, perfect practice will lead to a perfect score.

International English Language Testing System is for academic and immigration purposes to countries such as UK, Canada, Australia, USA and New Zealand.  The test can be taken on most weekends throughout the year. You can resit the test as many times you wish, however it is advised to appear for maximum 2 attempts in a month.

Should I take the SAT Subject Test?

If you’re applying to a selective college, you’ll probably need to submit scores from at least two SAT Subject Tests. As you develop your college list, keep track of each school’s admission requirements. If you’re not sure where you’re going to apply yet, plan to take at least two SAT Subject Tests, and remember that if a school “recommends” Subject Tests, you should go ahead and take them. What SAT Subject Tests are available?

Tests are available in the following subjects:

  • English Literature,
  • History (U.S. or World),
  • Language (Chinese, French, Hebrew, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Spanish or German),
  • Math (Level 1 or Level 2),
  • and Science (Biology-Ecological, Biology-Molecular, Chemistry or Physics)

How many SAT Subject Tests can you take?

You may take up to three Subject Tests in one sitting, although you should spread them out if you can. On test day, you are allowed to change the number of tests or subject you take with no penalty—except for Language with Listening tests. Also only one Biology test can be taken per test date. (The first 60 questions of the Biology test are the same whether you take Biology-Ecological or Biology-Molecular. Thus, you can take only one or the other.)

How are SAT Subject Tests scored?

Each Subject Test is scored on a 200–800 scale. You get 1 point for each correct answer, and ¼ point is deducted for each question you answer incorrectly. That means you shouldn’t necessarily answer every question, but guessing is always a good idea if you can eliminate two or three of the options.

Even though they’re scored on the same 200–800 scale, SAT Subject Test scores can’t be compared to general SAT  scores because the Subject Tests are taken by a higher percentage of high-achieving students. For example, a 750 on the math section of the SAT would put you in the 99th percentile, but a 750 on the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test would place you only in the 79th percentile. Likewise, for the SAT Chemistry Subject Test, a 750 only ranks at the 82nd percentile. Check out our guide to your SAT Subject Test scores.

About reading passages:

Passages on the Writing and Language Test can have varied range and can be different from one another in format and content. Passage topics can be from History/Social Studies, Humanities, and Science passages to Career passages

To make the understanding of SAT writing and language passages more specific we have classified the texts in three heads below-

1) Argument passages – These take a strong position and state facts to support a claim

2) Narrative Nonfiction passages- These are like story reading that we do in high school. This story will have a clear beginning, body, and the end

3) Informative or explanatory passages- These aim at teaching you about given topic (we recommend you to be careful with these)

Questions can be categorised into two broad types:

  1. Expression of Ideas questions
  2. Standard English Conventions questions

Expression of Ideas – Are the questions that will ask you to improve the effectiveness of communication in a piece of writing.

Standard English Conventions – Are basically grammar questions that test your communication skills.

Answering strategies:

Questions heavily rely on passages, so you a student has to read a lot during the test before marking the answer.

Sometimes there is no question but the options are given. Here, the test taker should know that the options are given in order to find the grammatically correct sentence out of all the given choices.

The new SAT has introduced tables, graphs and charts that are related to passage. These may not just give the details in the passage but also may have additional information. The test taker may require to you this information in order to answer certain questions.
